Vitamin B12 – a new take on an old friend

Summary: In the age of evidence-based medicine, vitamins and dietary supplements are not usually considered a frequent topic of relevant medical discussion. Of course, it is always necessary to assess which vitamin is involved and whether its administration really brings a demonstrable profit for patients. The positive effects of vitamin B12 are indisputable.

This article aims to summarize knowledge about vitamin B12 and above all to mention some news. Of the novelties presented, it is particularly important to emphasize the possibility of using oral administration of vitamin B12. Oral administration primarily enables confirmed absorption by passive diffusion even without the presence of an internal factor. However, a sufficient dose (1000 μg) is necessary for passive diffusion during oral administration. In the age of evidence-based medicine, vitamins and dietary supplements are not usually considered a frequent topic of relevant medical discussion.
