Use of continuous glucose monitorig in patients with type 2 diabetes
Summary: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is one of the most common metabolic diseases, and its effective management requires regular blood glucose monitoring. The gold standard for glucose monitoring in patients with T2DM has traditionally been self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) using a glucometer. However, this method has limitations, including a restricted ability to capture glycemic variability and an increased burden on the patient.
In contrast, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) using sensors represents a modern technology that allows for more detailed tracking of glycemic patterns and supports the individualization of diabetes treatment. While CGM is already a standard tool in the management of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), its benefits are becoming increasingly evident in patients with T2DM, particularly those on intensive insulin therapy.
This review article summarizes the principles of CGM, the most commonly used sensor types, and their clinical benefits in T2DM. It also discusses the economic aspects of CGM use, as well as current and proposed reimbursement policies in the healthcare system.
